What is a Street Car?

Street Cars are high performance race vehicles based on production road cars. The Street Car regulations allow a great deal of freedom in modifying engines, brakes and suspension while limiting the addition of aerodynamic aids and body modifications to keep them easily identifiable by the motoring public - hence the name 'Street Cars'.

Street Car racing is divided up into two categories. The 'outright' cars (over 2000cc) and the U2L (under 2060cc) cars. Cars competing in the outright category range from Mitsubishi Evo's, WRX's  Fiat Turbos, Nissan Skyline GTR's to early and late model RX7 turbos. While the U2L class cars range from Honda CRX's to Escort RS2000 Cosworths & BMW's.

While Street Cars are capable of incredible performance they are still comparatively economical to build and maintain. Largely due to the restrictions on expensive aerodynamic parts, the use of a control radial tyre and 'pump' fuels. Minimum racing weight and tyre sizes depend on the capacity of the engine. 'The larger the engine - the higher the minimum weight and the wider the tyre.'

What all this means for the spectator is a great mix of different cars with different levels of development and technology which provides exciting racing at both the front of the field and mid-field. Please feel free to view the gallery section for photos of just some of the current different makes and models of racing cars currently competing in the outright and U2L categories within the Street Car Racing Association.

When do the Street Cars race?

The Street Cars compete at eight race meetings per year hosted by the WA Sporting Car Club at Barbagallo Raceway. Each meeting usually consists of one qualifying session and three races - the second of which is the popular reverse grid format. While all races accumulate points toward the Street Car Series Championship, the single most important race of the year is the Annual Torque Trophy which has been running for more than 36 years.

To find out when Street Cars are next racing at Barbagallo Raceway check out the calendar in the members area of the website.

I want to race in Street Cars. Is my car eligible?

Eligible cars must be closed production vehicles manufactured primarily of steel and either sold through a recognised franchised dealer network in Australia or be of a type of which at least 5000 examples have been made world wide. Engines and ancillary equipment are free.

For more detailed information download the Street Car technical regulations from the 'Members Area' of the website or contact the Street Car Racing Association at admin@scrawa.com.

My car is eligible. How do I go racing in the Street Car Series?

Apart from your vehicle being eligible it must also comply with all safety regulations laid down by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS). For example, roll cage, harness, fire extinguishers etc. You'll need to apply for a Clubman Circuit (CC) licence from CAMS as well as memberships with the Street Car Racing Association and the WA Sporting Car Club.
